What FGM Is

This largely Muslim practice is as barbaric and disturbing an act as there is on Earth. James A. Bridge III
A Greek papyrus from 163 BCE referring to the circumcision of an Egyptian girl "as is the custom among the Egyptians." The geographer Strabo, writing around 25 BCE, described Egyptians as circumcising boys and excising girls. These earliest fragments of written evidence come from ancient Egypt more than two thousand years ago, while some researchers have proposed that certain forms may have originated in the ancient Sudanese region. Although its historical beginnings remain uncertain, modern research consistently shows that FGM has been perpetuated primarily through social and cultural traditions rather than any universal religious requirement
